Around 1,000 mountain gorillas exist in the wild, and Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is home to more than half of them, making this A&K Sanctuary unrivalled as a luxury lodge for gorilla trekking in Uganda. Reopened in June 2025 after a complete overhaul, the 10-suite property has been beautifully and eco-consciously redesigned in harmony with its natural surroundings. Its location is second to none – gorillas have been known to visit the grounds, and the brilliant forest rangers ensure sightings on every trek. Gorilla Forest Lodge is located in the Buhoma sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and is one of the very few luxury lodges situated within the park boundaries. Its location places guests just minutes from the gorilla trekking starting point.
By air, scheduled flights operate from Entebbe International Airport to Kihihi Airstrip (approximately 1 hour 45 minutes), followed by a road transfer of about 1–1.5 hours to the lodge. By road, the journey from Kampala or Entebbe takes approximately 10–11 hours, while travelers coming from Kigali can expect a full-day transfer depending on border formalities and road conditions.
Gorilla trekking is available year-round, but the dry seasons (June–September and December–February) generally offer the most comfortable trekking conditions. The wetter months bring lush scenery, excellent birdwatching opportunities, and fewer visitors.
Gorilla trekking permits are mandatory and should be booked well in advance, especially during peak seasons. The minimum age for gorilla trekking is 15 years. Visitors spend up to one hour with a habituated gorilla family once located by rangers.
